Across the Aisle, on the Couch

Earlier this week the Hollywood Reporter reported on a study from Experian Simmons that revealed the television preferences of Republicans versus Democrats. It contained few surprises, but, naturally, the Internet ate it up.

I wish, though, that Simmons had released an accompanying report: TV shows liked equally on both the left and right wings. I understand that that one wouldn’t have the same viral potential, but it also wouldn’t have reinforced the partisan, we-are-so-different-than-them nature of our national dialogue.

So in the spirit of NRA ladies and gay investment bankers who both love Oprah, here is a list of ten shows that received high scores from both Democrats and Republicans, in ascending order of score disparity.

  1. Desperate Housewives (this is the only high-scoring show that scored the same amongst both groups)
  2. How I Met Your Mother
  3. The Mentalist
  4. The Good Wife
  5. Dancing With the Stars
  6. NCIS
  7. Two and a Half Men
  8. Friday Night Lights
  9. The Bachelor
  10. Lie to Me

So, if you’re inviting someone from across the the aisle over for a TV night, you have plenty to choose from. Kumbaya.
